Joint meeting hears about role of cycling in promoting public health

Earlier this week we were delighted to take part in a joint meeting with Southwark Cyclists in which we heard from the newly appointed Director of Public Health for Lambeth and Southwark Dr Ruth Wallis. She explained the government changes that have moved public health from NHS to local authority control.

Dr Wallis was keen to listen to our suggestions on how she could work towards supporting active travel in the boroughs as a means of promoting health and wellbeing for Lambeth and Southwark residents. An immediate action she promised was to write to Southwark supporting the proposed borough-wide 20mph speed limit. We hope to develop a similar strategy for Lambeth.

Come to the Lambeth Cyclists meeting this evening in Stcokwell!

We hope you can join us for Lambeth Cyclists' meeting this evening  (20 November 2012) 7:30pm at the Priory Arms pub, Lansdowne Way, Stockwell, SW8.

The first part of the meeting will be business looking at latest developments in cycling in the borough followed from approximately 8:30 onwards by drinks in the bar - it would be great to see you for all or just the second part of the meeting!

Tonight come and hear from the joint Lambeth and Southwark Director of Public Health

Come along this evening, 19 November 2012, to a joint Lambeth and Southwark Cyclists meeting where we will be hearing from Dr Ruth Wallis,  the new Director of Public Health for Lambeth and Southwark.

Ruth  will be outlining how the Public Health team will be working to develop cycling in the two  borough. Local authorities will be taking over responsibility for public health from the NHS from April 2013 and so this is an opportune time to bring cycling to the top of the agenda. By having this joint meeting with Southwark Cyclists we hope to show our strength and desire to see cycling valued and promoted.

As well as Ruth Wallis the meeting will also hear from Caroline Russell on the 20mph policy in Islington (all Islington operated roads in the borough have a 20mph speed limit - the first council in the country to introduce such a measure) as well as Laura Brannon from Guys and St Thomas Hospital on air pollution research they are carrying out.

This is a joint Lambeth and Southwark meeting: Monday 19 November 2012 6:30pm at Can Mezzanine, 32-36 Loman Street SE1 0EE (just off Great Suffolk Street, near Blackfriars Road), cycle parking nearby.

Architecture ride looks at nautical London

Our October architecture ride toured architecture related to London’s nautical and maritime history.

Many of the impressive buildings we visited are testament to London's hugely significant maritime past - for example the various Admiralty buildings in Whitehall, the extravagant former Port of London Authority headquarters in Trinity Square and of course, the former Naval Hospital in Greenwich with its impressive Chapel and Painted Hall, designed by Wren and Hawksmoor.

While these buildings have found new uses as government offices, hotels or a university, some of the buildings we visited retain their original purpose, for example the headquarters of the national lighthouse authority, Trinity House, or the home of the Company of Watermen at St Mary-at-Hill.

A warming Finnish lunch was had at the Finnish Church in Rotherhithe, originally established to cater for seafarers away from home - also the only church in London with a sauna!

Thanks to Tessa Wright for planning and leading this ride.
