On 19 November 2015 the Mayor of London Boris Johnson formally opened the section of Cycle Superhighway 5 running from Oval station to Pimlico across Vauxhall Bridge.
In a superhighway first this section is fully segregated meaning that cyclists can travel on a traffic free straight route from the Kennington/ Oval area across the Bridge avoiding the Harleyford Road and Vauxhall Cross one-way systems.
Transport for London traffic count figures show that in the three weeks following its completion the number of cyclists travelling across the bridge has increased by 30% at peak times meaning that cyclists now account for 40% of the traffic across the bridge.
