Lambeth Cyclists architecture ride report: 24 September 2011: Cubitt

Our September architecture looking at the work of Thomas Cubitt was enjoyed by 20 cyclists on a glorious sunny day.

Starting at Buckingham Palace, Cubitt built the East wing, we progressed through the wealthiest parts of London and then down the social scale! From Belgravia to Pimlico to Battersea and Clapham we saw the legacy of Cubitt in all its white stucco glory, ending with a drink at our old meeting place the Bread & Roses pub, which was built by Cubitt in 1846!

Lambeth Cyclists architecture ride: 24 September 2011: Cubitt

Thomas Cubitt - master builder, social campaigner, friend of royalty, almost forgotten!

Cubitt house in Pimlico on lambethcyclists.org.ukJoin us for a short ride exploring the legacy of Thomas Cubitt.

Cubitt was a Clapham resident who became one of Londons most prolific and influential 19th century builders and architects but who is barely known today.

Come and discover how his vision links such varied places as Buckingham Palace, Pimlico, Clapham, Bloombury, Blackfriers Bridge, Belgravia and Battersea Park.

Lunch hopefully in Battersea Park so bring a picnic or buy lunch there.

Finishing at a Pub some of you may know in Clapham...

Start 10:15 for 10:30 Front of Buckingham Palace
Finish 3:30 - 4pm Clapham

West Norwood goes car free

Norwood Car Free Street sign on lambethcyclists.org.uk
Car Free Day this year in Lambeth saw Norwood High Street closed to motor traffic with the usual traffic queues replaced with music, dancing, food and fun.

Lambeth Cyclists contributed to the occasion by handing out cycling information, talking to people about cycling in Lambeth and demonstrating our pedal powered music machine.

The road closed forms part of the West Norwood gyratory system and was an illustration for local residents of what could happen if the one way system was returned to two way working. The general feedback we picked up on was that people were positive about the changes and it was noticeable that the traffic appeared to be flowing freely with no ill effects due to the removal of the gyratory for the day.

Car Free Day in Westnorwood on lambethcyclists.org.uk
We in Lambeth Cyclists would like to see all gyratory systems in the borough removed as we believe that they are detrimental to pedestrians, cyclists, bus users and ultimately car drivers. We hope that Lambeth and Transport for London will continue to work to make Norwood High Street and the surrounding roads better for all road users.

Lambeth Cyclists are organising more cycle maintenance classes this autumn: the next set of five classes will start on 11 October 2011

Feedback from earlier classes shows they have been very well received. As one participant put it:

"Simon is a fantastic, patient teacher who makes sure everyone "gets it". I found the course to be great value, having paid for itself several times over in savings on shop servicing. Couldn't recommend it enough."

Hundreds Skyride from Lambeth

On 4 September 2011 Lambeth Cyclists successfully organised two feeder rides to the central London car free Skyride.

Although not as popular as previous years (possibly due to the weather and timing) hundreds of people enjoyed our led rides from Streatham Hill Station and Clapham Common.

We hope that by showing them how easy it is to get around Lambeth and to central London by bike we will encourage participants to cycle more across Lambeth and London day to day.
